Notes: Inscribed in pencil on verso "...d'or, 18th Mar 57." Alfred Capel-Cure (1826-1896) joined the army at the age of eighteen, rising through the ranks in active service to the level of major in 1855. His uncle, the painter and photographer Robert Henry Cheney taught him photography, and in 1850, Capel Cure began making salt prints of architectural subjects--manor houses, cathedrals, abbeys, and churches. His last known photograph is dated 1860, a time when amateur photography in general was in decline. When he left the army in 1867 he had risen to the rank of Colonel in the Grenadier Guards. Some decades later, Cure accidentally killed himself while dynamiting the roots of trees in his park.
