Pont Vauban / Barrage & toit du musée arts modernes et contemporains en ar plan

                Le barrage fut construit de 1681 à 1688 selon les plans de Vauban. Les ponts couverts ne permettaient plus de défendre correctement le sud de la ville. Il a donc été décidé de construire ce barrage. Baptisé « la Grande Écluse », le barrage était censé, en cas d'attaque, en bloquant ses arches et en fermant les vannes, faire monter le niveau de l'Ill et inonder tous les terrains situés au sud de la ville, et donc les rendant infranchissables par l'ennemi. Ce moyen de défense fut utilisé lors du siège de Strasbourg en 1870, provoquant l'inondation des quartiers situés en
 amont. 

🇬🇧      The dam was built from 1681 to 1688 according to Vauban's plans. The covered bridges no longer made it possible to properly defend the south of the city. It was therefore decided to build this dam. Named "the Great Lock", the dam was supposed, in the event of attack, by blocking its arches by closing the valves, to raise the level of the Ill and flood all the land located south of the city, and therefore the making it impassable to the enemy. This means of defense was used during the siege of Strasbourg in 1870, causing the flooding of the districts located upstream. 

🇩🇪    Der Damm wurde von 1681 bis 1688 nach Vaubans Plänen gebaut. Durch die überdachten Brücken war eine ordnungsgemäße Verteidigung des Südens der Stadt nicht mehr möglich. Deshalb haben wir uns entschieden, diesen Damm zu bauen. Der Staudamm mit dem Namen „Große Schleuse“ sollte im Falle eines Angriffs, indem er seine Bögen durch Schließen der Ventile blockierte, den Pegel des Flusses Ill anheben und das gesamte Land südlich der Stadt überschwemmen sie für den Feind unpassierbar machen. Dieses Verteidigungsmittel wurde während der Belagerung von Straßburg im Jahr 1870 eingesetzt, was zur Überschwemmung der flussaufwärts gelegenen Stadtteile führte.
