Fire on the Hills

            The Acharacle fire engine and its crew have been out most of the day monitoring and fighting fires over the hill tops between Kinlochmoidart and Roshven. Earlier I met some people down at Castle Tioram who had escaped from Glenuig because the smoke was driving them out of their houses. Yes, life is different round here. Have you been watching Highland Cops on the BBC? It's rather different to the city based Policing programs we normally see on TV with their constant car chases and drugs raids. Highland Cops explains the problems caused by the remoteness and expanse of the Highlands, where, for instance, our police force is a single policewoman based in Strontian, to patrol the whole of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. Even in an emergency under blue lights it might take her two hours to reach an incident at the extremities of her patch. And there she was, one moment out west in Kilchoan, and later far to the southeast in Glencoe. But she happily states that when she got her patch, she won the lottery, because we are such nice people here, and there is no crime to deal with. Ok just the odd bit of deer or salmon poaching, and a smidgin of drug issues in the city of Fort William. Oh, and an old lady got knocked down once.
