Is it really that blue? - a photo on Flickriver

            Well, yes it is! Moody blue even under a heavy grey sky! But why it is blue is apparently because the red (long wavelengths) part of white light is absorbed by ice and the blue (short wavelengths) light is transmitted and scattered. The longer the path light travels in ice, the more blue it appears.

This is the Svinafellsjokull glacier, Iceland. It was another place where we plodded and floundered as we sank into deep snow, got caught in a bitter hailstorm and teetered on ice above high parts to which we would not return if we lost our footing. 

Having got past the age of where I believed I actually might be a proper explorer one day, I never imagined I would actually stand by a real glacier.
