Aviation Heritage - a photo on Flickriver

During WWII the county of Lincolnshire in the UK was known as 'Bomber County', due to the fact that there were a lot of airfields that were being used to launch attacks on the enemy, in fact the famous 'Dambusters' were launched from RAF Scampton just north of Lincoln.

All of the airfields are still here in some form and some still active, although not with bombers or other WWII aircraft. Some of the historic sites in the northern part of Lincolnshire have joined to form a Northern Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage trail. At each airfield there are information boards like this one detailing the part it played in the war. All are quite accessible if you want to follow the history the area played back in war.
