The Holy Souls in Purgatory - a photo on Flickriver

            Today, 2 November, is All Souls day when we pray for all the faithful departed:

This photo shows part of the Purgatorial altar in the Cathedral of San Cristobal de La Laguna, Tenerife. The holy souls in Purgatory are being purged of their venial sins and worldly attachments by the flames of charity. For example, the man in the foreground points to his wig, which was a symbol of his status. Such worldly pride and vanity has to be purged away before the soul can see God in heaven.
