Description: Vannes is located along the Gulf of Morbihan, at the confluence of the Vannes River. The city was founded more than 2000 years ago and was the capital of Brittany throughout the 9th century.

In ancient times, the people of Vannes resisted the Roman invasion under Julius Caesar quite successfully. In fact, these Armoricans were a model for the fractious tribe of the Astérix comic book series.

The historic part of the city is surrounded by a high wall and includes the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Patern. Most of the other buildings date back to the early 19th century, and some are leaning over so badly that I half expected them to collapse as we walked along the narrow cobbled streets that run between them.
