My brother David and friend George, 1965

            I made this shot of David and George on 40th Avenue in Bois-des-Filion, Quebec, with my first 35mm camera, a Kowa-H. I think the town had just put in sewers the previous year and the roads had not been re-paved yet. In those years I had taken over as the family photographer, and there was no more lining everybody up for posed snapshots twice a year; instead I roamed freely and snapped away at real life, capturing real moments. George and David were best friends. All of us kids played hockey year round, on backyard rinks or in driveways or on the street. David is carrying goalie pads. I only recently scanned the old negative, and it's overexposed but that seems to work because their faces are in shadow.
