2208_0520 Mule Deer Bucks - a photo on Flickriver

            The sun had not yet risen as I meandered along the gravel road leading to the park. Things looked altogether much dimmer than they do in the photo. When I saw the Mule Deer bucks cross in front of me, heading for the fence, I knew they were going to jump, so I made a quick settings adjustment and slowed to a stop. ISO 6400? I've never gone so high; I hate sacrificing quality. But with no other choice, I shot away, hoping for the best.

After considerable noise reduction in Topaz DeNoise, and other processing tweaks, I sat looking at the result, finally realizing why it seemed familiar. It reminded me - and still does - of the old Agfachrome slide film. I shot a few dozen rolls of the stuff back in the early 1970s. It had a warm cast and grain the size of tennis balls. Its dyes were not stable, like those of Kodachrome or Ektachrome, and fifty years later those originals have all faded to a sort of burry magenta soup. Before the colours faded, I was able to scan a couple dozen of them - really there weren't all that many good ones. Those were my early days. And luckily I didn't buy another roll of Agfa after about 1972. 

Anyway, here it is, a modern day version of Agfachrome slide film, created by pure chance. It really does look a lot like that old emulsion. The most notable difference? I shot at ISO 6400. Afgachrome was rated at ASA (ISO) 50.
