1906_2900 White-tailed Prairie Hare

            Another shot of the White-tailed Prairie Hare - or Jack Rabbit - from late June. This creature's fur changes from grey and brown to snow white in winter, when it becomes nearly invisible against the snow. Years ago, long before I had even visited the prairie, a friend from Weyburn, Saskatchewan, described walking along a country road in winter at dusk and seeing hundreds of black-tipped ears, all pointing straight up on the alert, each of which was attached to an invisible hare. 

If they were able to turn green in the summer, they would have better camouflage for protection from their many predators, but then... there would be too many hares. Nature has a way of keeping things in balance. Ah, but it's summer time, days of plenty, salad days (a term coined by Shakespeare, by the way). No more hare-brained theories. My cup runneth over.
