1708_1839 At the Store - a photo on Flickriver

            This is my friend, Colleen, at the recreated Hudson's Bay trading post at Fort Carlton. The interpreter is holding a .50 calibre flintlock trade musket, smooth bore, not too accurate but no doubt loud. On the counter are assorted items including a bullet mould, powder horn, musket balls, small leg-hold trap (the fur trade was and remains a cruel business), several pipes and twists of tobacco. Other trade goods can be seen in the background. 

The original fort burned during the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, and was reconstructed in 1967 and opened as a provincial park. Nine years later it was named a National Historic Site of Canada. True to the original layout, it nevertheless felt a little sterile to me: nice clipped grassy lawns, no debris, no troublemakers hanging around. Everything neat and orderly, which was probably not the case historically. The interiors were very authentic in feel, however, offering visitors a glimpse into the days of the fur trade in the mid-nineteenth century.
