St Mary and St Nicholas, Wrangle, Lincolnshire

A big church in one of the lonely marshland villages to the north-east of Boston. Mostly Perpendicular in style, but feeling long rather than high, and plenty of early survivals, including a fine 13th Century south doorway.

The church is home to one of the best collections of late 14th and early 15th Century glass, including several dozen complete figures of saints, Old Testament prophets and kings, and surviving scenes of the Resurrection and the Assumption, as well as many fragments.

There's some good 20th Century glass too, although Pevsner considered Albert Lemmon's 1947 window of 20th Century figures at the Adoration 'a painful contrast' with the medieval glass.

In the long chancel, an early 17th Century monument to Sir John Reade and family, including the charming detail of one of the sons depicted as a baby in a cradle. On the floor in front of it a fine brass of a century earlier.
