composite: fragmentary saint with angel head (15th Century)

A high, narrow church with a south tower forming the porch. I had not been here since December 2005, and in that time this church has fallen into decay and apparent disuse. Glass quarries are missing in several windows, an old wasps nest fills a hole in the east window, and peeping into the church through a window was to see dust and dirt all around.

The church was locked, of course, and yet curiously a sign in the porch said that it would be open on a Wednesday morning for 'private prayer', suggesting that it has been put up recently as a result of the pandemic. By coincidence I was here on a Wednesday morning at the prescribed time, but there was no one about.

The photographs I took sixteen years ago show a reasonably well-kept church with a number of interesting features. I wonder what happened here? Nearby Deopham is in a similarly vulnerable state, and has been declared 'a church at risk' by Heritage England.
