Holy Trinity, Leeds, West Yorkshire

Holy Trinity is shoe-horned in on Boar Lane among the glitzy shopping centres of this energetically reinvented city. A product of the 1720s with a tower added at the start of the 19th Century, it is entirely in the style of London churches of the time like St Mary le Strand and St Clement Dane. 'It is almost as if,' the rector observed to me, 'someone with money went to London and liked what they saw', which may very well be exactly what happened. She also told me that the church had recently been awarded a considerable sum of money to make it more suitable for its modern role at the heart of the city, which is a good thing, because it must be said that the interior is currently not very inviting. The Victorians replaced the furnishings, but most of these have now been removed and replaced with cheap modern chairs. The walls are lined with gloomy memorials, some of which came from the nearby church of St Paul, demolished at the start of the 20th Century. There are so many of them that they are inevitably the overwhelming impression that anyone will take away.

The domed, pillared apse at the east end, with its glass by William Wailes, provides a moment of relief and a hint of what might have been and might be again. Holy Trinity, of course, did not benefit from being burnt out in the London Blitz like those churches on which it was modelled, and so perhaps it is not fair to call it out on its gloom, which in any case might soon be dispelled in a less traumatic way.

A curious and delightful survival is tucked in at the north-east corner. This is an early 20th Century altar and reredos of the Annunciation, which were brought here from a theological college chapel after it closed. It is easy to imagine the clouds of incense which once must have boiled in front of it, and so it seems rather out of sorts with the drab, faded statement of the 18th Century Enlightenment which houses it now.
