Farm decor - a photo on Flickriver

Farm decor

            This is an antique seed spreader adorned with a longhorn skull. I like longhorn skulls and I enjoy antique farm equipment but I’m not sure one enhances the other. The seed spreader was likely used for seeding cover crops (green manure) in this orchard land. It was once the practice to plant mustard between the tree rows and then disk it under at its most succulent. The decaying (composting) foliage served as fertilizer creating nitrogen as well as keeping the soil aerated. The metal bin held the seed and below are two flat spinning disks driven by a gear mechanism by the turning wheels. This is the rear of the implement. It may have been first pulled by horses or mules or a small tractor. One or two men stood on the wagon bed emptying individual bags of seed into the hopper as the seeder was towed between the trees. The spinning disks broadcast the seed.
