Flickriver

            Yesterday I visited Calne in Wiltshire.  This pig sculpture commemorates the pork processing business of C T Harris & Co which used to dominate the town, both physically (the factory was huge and occupied a central site), and as an employer.  As an outsider, it's hard for me to begin to grasp the economic impact the factory's closure in 1983 must have had, with the loss of 2,000 jobs.  This pig is looking towards a small rank of unmistakably 1930s shops in The Square: the original metal-framed windows survive on the first floor, but sadly two flag poles have gone - one of the mountings is visible above the pig's right ear.
