Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis)

We have couple of pairs of white-breasted nuthatches coming into the feeder for most of the summer and now that it is getting colder the pygmy nuthatches are flocking and also coming into the feeder. Both these nuthatches are ignoring the human component to the yard! But this year we have had only the one pair of red-breasted nuthatches and this pair is the most skittish of all the nuthatches and consequently have been the most desirable for me to capture!

The red-breasted nuthatch, like all nuthatches, is monogamous. The male courts the female with a peculiar display, lifting his head and tail while turning his back to her, drooping his wings, and swaying from side to side.

This bird excavates its own cavity nest, above ground. The red-breasted nuthatch makes the nest secure by daubing sticky conifer resin globules around the entrance, the male applying the resin outside and the female inside. The resin may deter predators or competitors (the resident birds avoid the resin by diving straight through the entrance hole). The nest is lined with grass, moss, shredded bark and rootlets. 

In the past, the red-breasted nuthatch and four other species — the Corsican nuthatch, the Chinese nuthatch, the Algerian nuthatch and the Krüper's nuthatch — were thought to be a single species. These five make up a well-defined species group known as the "Sitta canadensis group", and are sometimes considered to be a superspecies. Within the species group, DNA studies have shown that the red-breasted nuthatch, the Corsican nuthatch and the Chinese nuthatch make up one clade and the Algerian nuthatch and Krüper's nuthatch make up a sister clade.
