Great Basin Gopher snake (Pituophus catenifer deserticola)

This was a lifer for me, and not a disappointment to say the least. Over the memorial day weekend I took the sam to do some camping at Craters of the Moon and to trap for chipmunks at a neighboring lava field just outside of Great Falls Idaho. While I was up on the lava flow checking my line of traps, my wife and kids saw the snake down by the road at the transition to sage scrub. Once she described what it looked like I know immediately what it was so I dropped my stuff and ran (as fast as one can on the jagged lava rocks) down to where they saw it. There were a ton of shallow rodent holes everywhere and so I began to lightly dig up and follow the holes near where he had gone down into. after about a minute, I unearthed the beast. He was a solid 3-3.5 ft and quite docile once I grabbed him. After showing to my kids and taking a few images, I released him back down a hole and finished walking my line.
