A Repurposed Bank Building (with RPPC inset) In Ashland, Illinois

            A view of the Farmers State Bank building in the 200 block of W. Editor St. Completed in 1905, the bank became the State Bank of Ashland in 1933. In recent years. the building has been repurposed as a restaurant now doing business as the Ashland Diner. The last time I checked, the second floor of the building had been made into apartments. 

The inset is a real photo postcard from my collection postmarked on September 30, 1909 that shows a busy scene in front of the bank. While the men and boys standing in front of the bank appear to have been posed for the photo, the other women in the scene, with the exception of the fancily dressed girls crossing the street, were either unaware or didn't care a photograph recording the moment was about to be taken.

The Village of Ashland is located in west central Illinois, about 22 miles WNW of Springfield. The village had a population of 1,137 at the 2020 census, making it the third largest population center in Cass County behind Beardstown and Virginia, the county seat.
