Toucan facts, South America - a photo on Flickriver

            The Toucan’s colorful and huge beak is recognized throughout the world. Toucans live in the tropical forests of Central America and South America. Toucans  use their large sharp beaks in order to cut through fruit, and small prey. It makes up about one third of their body weight
   .Toucans oversized beak is also used  to control its internal temperature   When exposed to hot temperatures, or while expending energy in flight toucans use their beaks to release heat. However, when they are exposed to colder temperatures they can block the flow of blood to their beak keeping the heat inside their body.
Why is the beak so colorful. Scientists still are not sure but bright color in many animals and plants is often developed over time as a sexual attraction and to ward off predators. I saw this one at a garden in Cartagena, Columbia.
