Divine Arches and Light - a photo on Flickriver

            Needed a break from prison (I know, groan).  All the comments and references to the old prison interior as cathedral-like made me think about shooting a real cathedral.  So, decided to visit a cloistered Trappist (Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance) monastery outside Atlanta, the Monastery of the Holy Spirit,  and see what I could come up with.  You can only shoot from the back of the abbey church.  The light is all natural, filtered through stained glass windows.   

This Trappist monastery in Conyers, Georgia, is one of only 12 in the United States.  It apparently also has the distinction of being the only abbey church actually built by the monks themselves.  Construction of the monastery was begun over 60 years ago and the abbey church was finally completed in 1969.   It is made of wood and concrete, and even the stained glass was made by the monks.  There are less than 50 monks cloistered there today.  Apparently these monks don't believe in air conditioning and after spending an hour in here with 95 degree temps outside, I was dripping wet.  Still, a great experience.
