1973 Schwinn Speedster. Image made on W 19th Street near 8th Ave, Chelsea, NYC, 27-Jan-2020.

Dad bought it new in 1973 at Michael's in Eatontown, NJ; I've had it since 2005. The color is "campus green." Recently tuned up by Hal, cofounder of Bicycle Habitat, NYC (the way Hal in his dreadlocks waxes poetic about the 1970s Schwinns and the 3-speed Sturmey Archer hubs is worth the cost of the tune-up alone).

Some new parts seen in these images: (i) Wald 157 Front Giant Delivery Bicycle Basket (21 x 15 x 9, Silver). (ii) New tires and tubes: Kenda 26 x 1-3/8 - 1-1/4 Schwinn S-6, gumwall side.* (iii) New front and rear brake pads, new rear brake cable and housing, and trued wheels (Hal @ Bicycle Habitat, NYC)** (iv) Japanese brass bell (from Rivendell catalog). (v) Minoura LH-100 under-basket light mount.

* I don't know what I'm going to do when Kenda stops making replacement tires for Schwinn S-6 wheels.

** When Hal trued the wheels, he also straightened the rim sidewalls to eliminate the brake pulsing. He wasn't able to make them perfect; there is some slight pulsing when braking. That said, the brake pads and cables are new, so it stops well. The shifter cable (but not its housing) was updated in 2009.

I think of the cosmetics as Grant Petersen of Rivendell Bicycle Works calls "beausage" (beauty through usage). It is a functional commuting and transportation bicycle... and the cosmetics are theft prevention. :-) With the chain guard and upright seating position, I routinely ride it to work in a suit.
