59 001 'Yeoman Endeavour' at Eastleigh

The summer of 2005 marked the 20th anniversary of when the first four class 59 diesel locomotives entered service with Foster Yeoman after they were the first locomotives to be built by General Motors in its plant in Illinois over in the USA in 1985 plus they were the first locomotives in Britain to be owned by a private freight operator, although they were crewed by British Rail drivers. Fittingly the doyen member of the class, 59 001 'Yeoman Endeavour' is seen here on the late morning of Wednesday 29th June 2005 in the reversible platform 3 at Eastleigh with its Number '1' (engine) end facing the camera which has an electric bell fitted as a symbolic gift from General Motors in the USA to Foster Yeoman when these four class 59 locomotives were built back in 1985.
