            Die ehemalige Bischofskathedrale, heute päpstliche Basilica Minor (1925) und Propsteipfarrkirche, gehört mit den Domen in Mainz und Speyer zu den großartigsten Schöpfungen romanischer Kirchenbaukunst. Anstelle merowingisch-karolingischer Vorgängerbauten ließ Bischof Burchard (1000-1025) eine doppelchörige Anlage mit vier Türmen errichten. Von 1130-1181 Neubau des heutigen Domes in hochromanischen Formen auf den burchardzeitlichen Grundmauern. Reicher ornamentaler Schmuck, Plastiken, Kaiserportal im Norden (Streit von Kriemhild und Brunhild im Nibelungenlied), gotisches Portal im Süden, Wand des dreistöckigen romanischen Kreuzganges. Ostchor nach Brand 1689 barock ausgestattet, Hochaltar von Balthasar Neumann, Steinbildwerke aus dem 14./16. Jh. (Seitenschiff, Nikolauskapelle), Reste von Ausmalungen. Grablege der salischen Herzöge.
