Dreaming of summer

            New Zealand's North Island has had an exceptionally wet and windy summer. Today is the first day of autumn. While I can only complain that I have not been out hiking, camping or pack rafting, other people had their houses flooded or their livelihoods swept away. Damaged roads and bridges will take years to repair. Abnormal ocean warmth in the West Pacific has injected extra moisture and energy into storm systems that have hit us over the summer. The influence of a La Niña climate pattern is expected to affect us well into 2023.  Unsustainable land use practices have compounded the damage caused by a series of severe weather events.
