Kawakawa leaves- Piper excelsum - a photo on Flickriver

            Piper excelsum, called Kawakawa, is a small tree endemic to New Zealand.  It is a member of   the pepper family (Piperaceae).  Kawakawa is a densely branched, aromatic tree with large heart shaped fleshy leaves growing up to 5 metres.  The leaves are often covered with insect holes caused by the Kawakawa looper moth caterpillar Cleora scriptaria which are immune  to the poisons in the leaf.  I was excited to find these leaves in perfect condition growing next to our campsite  at Totaranui in Abel Tasman National Park.
