            The woodlands on the western side of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State are temperate rainforests.  If your vision of a jungle is in the steamy tropics, then the idea of  a temperate rainforest having conifers and northern broadleaf trees might seem incongruous.  However, once you see it, the notion makes sense.  The place is more misty than steamy, temperate rather than tropical, but it is a jungle nonetheless.  This image is a quintessential view of the forest, with omnipresent moss hanging from every branch, and a forest floor carpeted in ferns.  However, this view is also rich in broadleaf trees, especially maples.  This the Maple Glade, a featured area in Olympic National Park on the north shore of Lake Quinault, a marshy area whose ponds support the deciduous trees.
