GDR, street scene - a photo on Flickriver

GDR, street scene

            Scan of an old analog photo that I made (against the light!) on one of my visits to East Germany. I don't remember where exactly it was. Does anybody recognise this street? 

What fascinated me most on our visits to the GDR (aka DDR) in the 70s and 80s was the atmosphere in the cities. Although this was just a few km away from my home and people spoke the same language (similar accent, even) this was more exotic for us than a trip across the Atlantic.

Strange cars, cobbled streets, no adverts, awkward political slogans, the smell of sulphur, soot and unidentifiable chemicals in the air and absolute darkness after sunset.

I know it sounds cynical but that's not how I mean it: Those trips for us were like visits to a large theme park. Or we felt like having wandered into an old German black-and-white movie.

Please don't misunderstand my remarks as pretentious Wessie arrogance: We did not look down on the GDR, let alone on the people there. Some of our friends were from the East and still are. And it's not that we found pleasure in other people's misery. It was difficult to get a visa, nobody did it just for fun. We found a special kind of beauty in the GDR and learnt a lot on these trips.
