the salt pans - a photo on Flickriver

the salt pans

            Several salt pans still exist on the hottest and driest part of the island but I am not sure how many of them are still producing salt. This one in the village of Tamarin does and so does the one next to it but the later is targeted for development.

The rocks in the foreground are basalt; the same rock that makes up the mountains and that was used to build the cobblestone "ponds", their low surrounding walls and also the building in the centre of the frame. Salt water is pumped to the ponds and left to evaporate. 

I like the composition of this shot and the black and white conversion. I have replaced the first version of this that I posted as I saw the next day that I had somehow straightened a layer rather than the whole image ... and that gave some strange double edges to the mountains. 

PS This is now ( 2017) the last working salt pan in Mauritius
