Cleistocactus fieldianus 12 growth - a photo on Flickriver

            Cactus species Cleistocactus fieldianus is a rare columnar type Cleistocactus eventually forming large clumps 9'ft. wide up to 18' ft. high but often shorter, the branches are elongated, at first erect or ascending but sometimes becoming pendent or even prostrate; ribs are few, averaging only 6 or 7, stout, broad, 1/4" to 3/4" high, depressed between the areoles and on young shoots and appearing as tubercled; areoles large, circular, short-lanate and spiny, with a depression extending upward from the upper side to constriction of rib; spines average 6 to 10, white, subulate, very unequal, the longest ones 2" long or longer. A very rare collector type cactus, seldom offered anywhere.
Flowers : flowers are red with cerise on petal edges, often fading to dark orange/red, blooms are profuse on mature sized plants 1' ft. or taller, forming near the tip or apex of stems, but with only one from an areole, with a cylindric flower tube 2-1/4" TO 2-3/4" long and a very narrow limb; ovary and flower-tube bearing ovate, acute scales, 1 to 3 mm long, these with long brown hairs in their axils; flower-tube within glabrous below its throat, bearing many stamens 1-1/2" long; perianth-segments red, 3/16" long; stamens exserted only beyond the perianth-segments, if at all; ovary globular, perhaps somewhat tuberculate, with scattered, long-hairy areoles; fruit probably fleshy, globular to ovoid, 3/4"+ in diameter. Showy, dusky-red flowers are attractive to hummingbirds making this plant a desirable drought tolorant landscape plant. Bloom Time is from late spring/early summer to
mid summer.

 More info. : Originally Cleistocactus fieldianus was collected by Harry Johnson in 1965 at the type locality, at 2600 m. at Huaraz, Dept. Ancash, Peru.

Care : Cleistocactus Fieldianus is an easy to care for landscape plant or can be kept as a ornamental container plant. Cleistocactus Fieldianus likes full sun by coast, some part shade maybe required for inland locations in mid-summer. Keep 50f and up, but can tolerate brief periods overnight in winter to 30s if kept dry. Regular water in summer. Plant in semi-rich soil mix with good drainage.
