In the Valley of the Gods - a photo on Flickriver

            I was after the Milky Way of course but I started shooting during nautical twilight. I find the color contrast between the light pollution reflected in the clouds and the not yet dark sky very pleasing.
It always amazes me how much light pollution a small town like Kayenta in the distance can throw into the sky. And the sun still contributes light to the sky during nautical and astronomical twilight which registers as a lighter blue in images.
I was in awe of the enormous rock structure that I camped below and a little bit uneasy too. Not too far away was a jumble of boulders that had come down from the mountain and some of those were bigger than my car. 
Around sunset a strong updraft developed and I had to hold on to my tripods. Then it died down only to blow again and that went on for several cycles until the night had settled in. The clouds became heavier for a while but even they dissipated later in the evening and everything calmed right down.
Once the clouds had gone the Milky Way was at it's best, a glowing white ribbon across the entire sky.
