            Why visit the real Alamo, when you can go see a fake one instead?  Set a few miles north of Brackettville, about two hours west of San Antonio, Alamo Village was created in 1960 as part of the movie set for 'The Alamo' starring John Wayne.  It is an exact-size replica of downtown San Antonio as it was in 1836, as well as a full-scale western town nearby with dozens of buildings.

Now it is a sleepy backwater tourist stop.  During the busy season, there are historical re-enactors in costume with shows and music.  But in the slow season, just two or three caretakers and the empty village with dusty, wind-blown streets.  It's like visiting Tombstone, only without the crowds.  Perhaps most disconcerting is that it's like a real old-west town - difficult to tell the difference most of the time between what are essentially movie props (although built as real, functional buildings, not just facades) compared to real century-old buildings in western ghost towns.

It is also called the 'movie capital of Texas', with over a hundred movies and shows filmed there over the years, as well as plenty of commercials and documentaries.  In addition to the original Alamo movie, some of the other shows include 'Lonesome Dove', 'Barbarosa', 'Alamo' (recent version), 'Bad Girls', 'Once Upon a Time in China and America', and more.
