Western Tanager -- First Year Female (Piranga ludoviciana); Santa Fe National Forest, NM, Thompson Ridge [Lou Feltz]

            At this time of year most of my photo activity concentrates on juvenile birds. I find the image references to be lacking in this area. It's relatively east to discriminate the juvies of this species from their parents. This bird is nearing adulthood, but juvies have mottled breast like that shown in this shot. Her bill will also lengthen with age. The adult birds (both sexes) have solid brilliant yellow underparts. The adult females of this species do not approach our bird oasis nearly as often as the males... they're busy tending the kids.
