Happy Father's Day in Australia.

I was not planning to post anything today. I've been feeling rather poorly over the weekend (and consequently have not been able to catch up with all the comments you have left). This being the first Father's Day without my father has been difficult, but eased by knowing that he could not have endured any more than he did before he died. He died believing he was going to a better place, and that is certainly true.

However, I did find this old slide that someone had taken of him in the 1960s. Dad was taking photographs of a local festival at Laiagam in what is now Enga Province in the Highlands of New Guinea. Photography at the time was a major interest to all expatriates working in the "Territory" (remember that until 1975 Papua New Guinea was administered by the Australian government).

This was not just snapshot photography (though few rose above this level of competence), but played an important role in documenting the history and anthropology of the period. It was a world truly passing away. Within one generation these people had moved from the proverbial stone age (with literal stone axes) to the jet age. More than that, I can recall sitting around the radio listening to the first moon landing in July 1969. Talk about culture shock.

Dad loved to take these photographs, not that he ever thought they might be published or seen by a wide number of people. But simply to record the people he truly loved. Papua New Guinea always was his second home. And one day in the near future we plan to place some of his ashes not far from where he can be seen here with his camera.

We miss you Dad.
