Sonnenblume (Helianthus annuus) sunflower

            Die Sonnenblume im engeren Sinne (Helianthus annuus) ist eine Art aus der Gattung der Sonnenblumen (Helianthus) innerhalb der Familie der Korbblütengewächse (Asteraceae).

Um gut zu gedeihen brauchen Sonnenblumen viel Sonne, müssen regelmäßig stark bewässert und mit stark stickstoffhaltigem Dünger versorgt werden. Sie werden am besten in fruchtbarer, feuchter, gut abgelaufener Erde mit viel Mulch angesät. Die Samen sollten einen Abstand von 45 cm haben (Anbau in Breitreihenkultur) und in 2,5 cm Tiefe liegen.

Die Sonnenblume wird am besten bei 7 bis 8 °C Bodentemperatur Anfang April ausgesät. Die Aussaat erfolgt als Einzelkornaussaat. Auf einem Hektar wachsen rund 60.000 bis 70.000 Sonnenblumen (6 bis 7 Pflanzen/Quadratmeter). Sie wächst etwa 150 Tage, vorzugsweise auf humus- und nährstoffreichen Böden mit guter Wasserversorgung und einer Wärmesumme über 1450 °C.

Sonnenblumen lassen sich in vier Typen unterteilen: Der Öltyp weist besonders viele Röhrenblüten auf. Die Sonnenblumenkerne besitzen einen sehr geringen Schalenanteil. Für einen Liter Öl werden die Kerne von rund 60 Sonnenblumen benötigt. Der Futtertyp bildet besonders viel Blattsubstanz aus. Er findet Verwendung als Grünfutterpflanze und zur Silagegewinnung sowie im Stoppelfruchtanbau zur Gründüngung. Der Ziertyp wächst in Gärten und besitzt oft mehrere Blüten pro Pflanze. Der Speisetyp zeichnet sich durch große und locker sitzende Kerne aus. Zu erwähnen sind auch neue transgene Rassen, die gegen einige Krankheiten immun sind.

Als Zwergsorten der Sonnenblume bezeichnet man solche, die lediglich maximal 60 bis 70 Zentimeter hoch sind. Sie sind damit standfester als die meterhoch wachsenden Sonnenblumensorten und können auch im Balkonkasten gepflanzt werden. Dazu gehören beispielsweise

    * ‚Sunspot‘, die goldgelb blüht und 40 bis 60 Zentimeter hoch wird.
    * ‚Double Dandy‘, die halbgefüllte, pollenfreie rote Blüten hat und etwa 60 Zentimeter hoch wird.

Zu den hohen Sorten, die sich eher für die Pflanzung im Garten eignen, zählen:

    * ‚Ring of Fire‘, die bis zu 120 Zentimeter hoch wird und deren Blütenblätter rot-gelb geflammt sind
    * ‚Sunrich Orange‘, die bis zu 170 Zentimeter groß wird und die sich durch orange Blüten auszeichnet
    * ‚Titan‘, die bis zu 350 Zentimeter groß wird. Sie hat leuchtend gelbe Blüten.

The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant native to the Americas in the family Asteraceae, with a large flowering head (inflorescence). The stem of the flower can grow up to 3 metres tall, with the flower head reaching up to 30 cm in diameter with the "large" seeds. The term "sunflower" is also used to refer to all plants of the genus Helianthus, many of which are perennial plants.

What is usually called the flower is actually a head (formally composite flower) of numerous flowers (florets) crowded together. The outer flowers are the ray florets and can be yellow, maroon, orange, or other colors, and are sterile. The florets inside the circular head are called disc florets. The disc florets mature into what are traditionally called "sunflower seeds", but are actually the fruit (an achene) of the plant. The true seeds are encased in an inedible husk.

The florets within this cluster are arranged spirally. Typically each floret is oriented toward the next by approximately the golden angle, producing a pattern of interconnecting spirals where the number of left spirals and the number of right spirals are successive Fibonacci numbers. Typically, there are 34 spirals in 1 direction and 55 in the other; on a very large sunflower you may see 89 in one direction and 144 in the other.
