Sonnenhut mit Ochsenauge - a photo on Flickriver

            ON EXPLORE #196: 2008.08.10. Mein einziger Schmetterling bisher in diesem Jahr... ein Ochsenauge...er gewährte mir drei Fotos, dann war er verschwunden. Es ist ein Weibchen, erkennbat an dem orangen Fleck!

Das Große Ochsenauge (Maniola jurtina) ist ein Schmetterling aus der Familie der Edelfalter (Nymphalidae).

Die Sonnenhüte (Echinacea), auch Scheinsonnenhüte oder Igelköpfe genannt, sind eine Pflanzengattung aus der Familie der Korbblütler (Asteraceae). Die ursprüngliche Pflanzensystematik nach Arthur John Cronquist umfasste vier Echinacea -Arten mit je zwei Varietäten, E. pallida (mit den beiden Varietäten E. pallida var. angustifolia und E. pallida var. pallida), E. atrorubens (mit den Varietäten E. atrorubens var. atrorubens und E. atrorubens var. paradoxa), E. laevigata und E. purpurea.

Die gegenwärtig vorherrschende Nomenklatur stammt von Ronald McGregor, die neun Echinacea -Arten, zwei mit wiederum je zwei Varietäten beschreibt.

My only one butterfly this year...The Meadow Brown (Maniola jurtina) is a butterfly found in European meadows, where its larvae feed on grasses.

Similar species are Gatekeeper (which prefers to rest with its wings open) and Small Heath (which is smaller).

There is marked sexual dimorphism in this species. Males are less colorful, with smaller eyespots and much reduced orange areas on the upper forewings. They are also much more active and range far about, while females fly less and often may not away from the area where they grew up.

Echinacea, commonly called Purple Coneflower, is a genus of nine species of herbaceous plants in the family Asteraceae. All are strictly native to eastern and central North America. The plants have large, showy heads of composite flowers, blooming from early to late summer. Some species are used in herbal medicines.

The genus name is from the Greek echino, meaning "spiny", due to the spiny central disk. They are herbaceous, drought-tolerant perennial plants growing to 1 or 2 m in height. The leaves are lanceolate to elliptic, 10–20 cm long and 1.5–10 cm broad. Like all asteraceae, the flowers are a composite inflorescence, with purple (rarely yellow or white) florets arranged in a prominent, somewhat cone-shaped head — "cone-shaped" because the petals of the outer ray florets tend to point downward (are reflexed) once the flower head opens, thus forming a cone.
