Matlock Cawdor Quarry Derbyshire Summer 1969

Industrial steam in Matlock as Peckett 0-4-0T 1749 of 1928 shunts Cawdor yard just north of Matlock station which is off to the left of this view.

The Midland Railway main line from Derby to Manchester, closed in 1968 beyond this point, passes in the forground. Only recently has the heritage Peak Railway restored the link with Network Rail and trains now run from Matlock station north to Rowsley. Peckett 1749 was preserved when steam finished at Cawdor Quarry in 1970 & is now at Ludborough in Lincolnshire.

The quarry was closed and a large Sainsburys supermarket built on the site a few years ago.

Steam on British Railways finished in August 1968 but industrial steam continued for several more years in the UK. I took very few photos of this & wish I had spent more time chasing these industrial scenes but at the time I didn't fully appreciate them.
