Heaton Mersey Stockport Cheshire 4th May 1968

            Another shot of the ex-Cheshire Lines Committee engine shed at Heaton Mersey on its last day of steam.

British Railways Standard 9F 2-10-0 92118 reverses away from the pit where the fireman had just dropped the fire. Earlier that day the loco had worked a freight train from Garston to Godley Junction & clearly still has plenty of steam in the boiler. 

This is the former Midland side of the shed with the offices on the right. The Cheshire Lines Committee was originally a GNR/MR/MSLR joint railway. At Heaton Mersey the Great Central Railway had equivalent offices off left of this view. After Grouping in 1923 it became a joint LMS & LNER operation & then on Nationalisation part of the London Midland Region.

Later in the day Stanier 8F 2-8-0 48356 towed the 9F and another 8F, 48319, to Newton Heath shed on the north side of Manchester. My mate and I rode on the footplate of the 9F. Based at Carnforth 10A 92118 only lasted until the 25th May before withdrawal came after only 12 years service.
