Verdun Lorraine France, 19th December 1969

            On the outskirts of Verdun, Glasgow-built in 1917, North British 2-8-0 140C301 in immaculate condition pulls a cement train tender first in the snow. Taken from an overbridge but does anyone know exactly where it was?

My geography, then or now, is not good enough to say whether it is heading north to the cement works or south back to Verdun station. However the trains I observed at Verdun station were tender first so possibly this is also heading north. One of these fine engines has been preserved by AJECTA & can be seen on steam specials all over northern France.

UPDATE March 2015: With the power of the internet and Google Maps, amazingly I now know where this was taken after 44 years! The view is looking to the SSW from the over bridge on the D330, Avenue du Général Boichut. So it is south of the station heading north towards Verdun. The line follows the river Meuse southwards eventually joining the line to Nancy.

UPDATE August 2020: I now discover that these cement trains ran between Dugny, south of Verdun, and Conflans.
