The crossing

            One could almost believe that 611 was only 8 yrs old and encountered a red '57 spiffy Chevy convertible with dual radio antennas and a continental kit. Two classics in one pic. You almost can't tell it isn't 1958. 

611 was displayed at the Fired Up! photo charter as she was seen in early life working through a grade crossing with compatible period cars. The North Carolina Transportation Museum did an excellent job with this charter and shoot. Lots of wonderful photo ops that were well managed in terms of crowd control. 

J Class Locomotive 611 was built May of 1950. It was in the last batch if 3 built making the class 14 in total. The first J's had 275 psi boilers, 70-inch (1,778 mm) driving wheels, and roller bearings on all wheels and rods; after about 1945 boiler pressure was raised to 300 psi. Calculated tractive effort was 80,000 pounds – the most powerful 4-8-4 without a booster. The locomotive is almost 110 feet in length and over 16 feet tall. the locomotive itself weighs in at 494,000 lbs. It was capable of speeds over 100 mile per hour.
