St. Michaels, MD, waterfront - a photo on Flickriver

            Local legend tells of a British naval force that was raiding Chesapeake Bay towns in conjunction with the British invasion of Maryland during the latter stages of the War of 1812. Some local boy recommended they darken all the houses and hang lanterns in the trees in hopes that the British would think the lanterns indicated where the town was and over-shoot the real village. Supposedly that happened and the British fleet sailed on, unaware, presumably, that they hadn't destroyed the town. Seems like the British couldn't have been all that intent on wreaking havoc if they let such a lame exercise fool them and never came back during daylight to admire their destructive handiwork, but it makes a great story.
