Mountain Ash - a photo on Flickriver

Mountain Ash

            My wife and I finally visited this tree after having heard about it over many years.  It is probably the tallest remaining Mountain Ash in Victoria [my state].  At 300- 400 years old it has grown to quite a size - 76 metres high, 15 metre girth at chest height and estimated 225 tonnes.  You can see my wife Diane standing on a platform a metre or so above ground level to the right of the tree trunk.  We also have some very large old trees near our home but this one is somewhat bigger.  The tree towers over the forest canopy as you can see in the photo below.  Many trees this large were cut down over the last one hundred and fifty years.  They actually used dynamite to split the trunks to a size they could handle after felling.  We are fortunate that some survived or like this one were saved by someone with a bit of foresight.

We were always meant to be conservation minded appreciators of the world around us, but people, being people, got greedy and pillaged forest, river and sea.  It is high time we stopped doing that.
