The Journey: Quane

            We found Quane!
To be more specific, we found the real Quane. Let me tell what happened, I will try to rein in my jubilation.
 I woke up from a dreamless sleep feeling much rested. I stretched and my hand bumped Djiimi in the arm, waking her up. 
“Uffffrff!” She complained through her gag, startling me. She was still tied to the stalagmite as I remembered, so how had I gotten so close? I had been at least ten feet away from her when I went to sleep. I concluded that I must have rolled over a couple times while asleep, but it still made me feel a bit creeped out to have been that close for so long...
I untied Djiimi, and we ate the very last scraps of the giant mushroom worm I had killed. Now we had no food left. At least the canteens are still pretty full, I thought.
Then we set off, going deeper into the worm's lair. The volume of bones littering the floor increased alarmingly after only a couple hundred yards. I had thought there were a lot before, but we went from walking past a bone here or there to balancing on a precarious carpet of white bones covering the entire floor of the cave in a matter of minutes! We did pass some uncovered rocks here and there, and a considerable number of them had pods shoved deep inside. We passed seven pods all told. Five of them hosted skeletal remains, all male or very old by Djiimi's assessment. I had stopped taking her gag off and simply had her nod “yes” or “no” to each pod. I got a “no” for five of the pods, and wondered how she had become so adept at deciphering dead bodies.
 I could tell the gender of the sixth pod's contents myself; it had a decomposing body in it, a small girl but not Quane. It sickened me to walk by the grotesque spectacle without doing anything, but she was already dead and opening the pod was out of the question...
Upon looking into the seventh pod, my heart nearly stopped. It was Quane! For the longest time, an impossibly long time, I thought she was dead. However, I strained my eyes and was rewarded as I saw a faint movement in her chest; she was still breathing, but only barely. I wasted no time and climbed up to the pod, intending to open it. Not wanting to hurt Quane with Djiimi's weapon, I opted to use my knife instead. As I carefully stabbed my knife into the slimy leathered pod, the difficulty of my task revealed itself. If only I knew what the symbols on the golden glove meant, one might have been some sort of cutter! 
After a couple minutes I had managed to saw a rent in the pod that went around about a third of the way. All the while a clear slime had been seeping out, I guessed it to be some sort of slow-acting gastric juice. I glanced over to check on Djiimi; she was resting against a rock.  It's just as well, I thought. I can't trust her not to hurt Quane anyway. 
After about twice again the amount of time I had spent I managed to cut the pod in half, exposing a deathly pale, thoroughly unconscious, but miraculously alive Quane. 
My heart ached as I lifted her limp body out. She had obviously been poisoned by the worm in much the way I had. And the only person who knew how to combat the poison was...I groaned.
“Djiimi!” I called, “I need you...I need you to heal Quane.”
I smoothed some bone-covered ground and gently laid Quane down. Then I untied Djiimi and gave her some of the fungus she had healed me with. (Which I had had the foresight to store in my pocket, suspecting we would find Quane in such a state) It was somewhat shriveled but  she accepted it. 
“Don't try anything,” I told her, “I'll be watching.”
She made a confused noise through her gag but got to work. 
First she drew an extremely thin knife out of her top, causing me to mentally slap myself and wish I had searched her there (she could have escaped!) and then quickly retract the wish in disgust. She cleaned it with a little of our water and stabbed it into the fungus, coating it with green juice. Then she carefully poked it into Quane's right leg, cleaned it, and stabbed the fungus again. She repeated the process with Quane's right arm and finally her left arm. The color had slowly been returning to her patient's face the whole time. I drew closer in hopeful anticipation. 
Quane's eyes blinked open...

Oh well...
At least Reldan will be happy no-

30th Journey bignette by the way, you'd think I could have made more in over a year and a half, oh well. 
Sorry this picture's a bit blurry...the focus here was sort of all over the place. :P
Oh, and sorry for the ridiculously long story. Not >:D
