SAR 19D 3322 "Clare", Muldersvlei, near Cape Town, Western Cape. 21.03.2023.

            The 21st March is celebrated as Human Rights Day in South Africa. It is historically linked with the 21st March 1960 and the events in Sharpeville. On that day 69 people died and 180 were wounded when police fired on a peaceful crowd that had gathered in protest against the Pass laws. The 21st March is a public holiday. 
As a result, the Ceres Rail Company ran a rail charter from Cape Town to their base at Ceres, using  SAR Class 19D, no. 3322 "Clare", which is a 4-8-2 oil burning locomotive, built by the North British Locomotive Co. in Glasgow in 1948, with a works no. 26042. 
The weather at 09.15 in the morning was unusually damp for the time of the year and no 3322 came to a brief halt in the station at Muldersvlei. In this photograph, the locomotive is getting going again but started to slip on the greasy rails, with dramatic effect.
