40 Shenyang J-16 Red Eagle - a photo on Flickriver

            The Shenyang J-16 is a strike fighter design and manufactured by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation in China. This multi-role fighter/bomber is derived from the tandem-seat J-11BS, which is in turn the domestic version of the Russian Sukhoi Su-30MKK sold to China in 2000. The J-16 is reported to have advantages over Russian Flanker variants with its wide application of newer materials, avionics, weapons, and sensors. The aircraft represents a transition by the Chinese aviation industry away from a past dependence on Russian technology towards developing modern derivatives that are superior to the Russian originals in many aspects.

The J-16 has upgraded avionics, AESA radar, composites and radar-absorbing materials, missile approach warning systems, the new WS-10A turbofan engines, electronic countermeasures, and a longer range, making it comparable to the F-15E Strike Eagle. The cockpit is fitted with a helmet-mounted display (HMD) system to improve the pilot’s situational awareness. The first flight of the J-16 is believed to have occurred in 2011-12. In April 2014, the PLAAF received a regiment of J-16s and officially entered service in 2015.

In this image, a J-16 flies over Chongqing in central China. Part of the 98th Air Brigade stationed at Baishiyi Air Base, the unit began receiving the Red Eagle in early 2018 to replace the J-11/Su-27SKs. Note the PL-10 “Thunderbolt-10” imaging infrared (IIR) AAMs on the wingtips and the PL-15 “Thunderbolt-15” active radar-guided long-range AAMs on the centre pylons.
