Robber's Gold

            In the 19th century, robbers would use Robber’s Roost to spot stagecoaches traveling through the area so they could rob them of their bounty including gold. In 2024 the gold has reached mountain proportions behind the rock formation, which seems to be covered in it! While passing by the glistening gold caught my eye and we explored further, discovering Sierra Nevada secrets previously unknown to us. All the while a deepening and threatening winter storm began to chase us, until ultimately it chased us away. As we made our escape, the light broke as we were passing Robber’s Roost. The roost is a protected sanctuary from February 1 through July 1 for the benefit of birds of prey who love to nest there, so I ran up to the edge of the fenced off area to capture a shot of the fleeting light. We had the most threatening sky coming at us out of the south and starting to spill over the Sierra Nevada crests. It was awe inspiring. Unbeknownst to me at the time, once I got home I noticed a prairie raptor is flying just above the rocks in this one shot perhaps coming in for a landing in its protected home. I have never before seen the Sierra Nevada so carpeted in yellow-gold flowers.
