The Fern - a photo on Flickriver

The Fern

            This blast from the past comes from the coast of Maine quite a long time ago. With my Mamiya 645 camera and 80mm lens, I wandered an island along the coast near Boothbay Harbor and pointed my camera at various things. One of the first photos I ever took with a proper camera was on this island of a fern not long before this, with a fond memory of my father showing me the workings of the family 35mm camera which was an Olympus OM-10. Perhaps that was on my mind when I settled on shooting this particular fern on a foggy morning. I had two film backs at the time. One was loaded with color film and the other with black and white. The color film in this case was Kodak Ektachrome Lumiere 100 which has long since been discontinued. This warm slide film’s influence is clear. Oddly enough I still remember the exposure for this one despite pretty poor record keeping of exposures back then. Four seconds at f/4 on the only lens I owned, 80mm 2.8, which was roughly equivalent to 50mm in 35mm field of view terms. I took two exposures, one of which had a wider depth of field. I prefer this one, and would later go on to print it myself using cibachrome which like the Lumber is dead except for legends like Christopher Burkett who is using up his last stock. I would win some kind of recognition in the Scholastic Arts awards though the details are hard to recall now with high school being so long ago. It has remained a favorite image of mine, perhaps my most favorite from my early days. Michael Strickland scanned this in the drum scanner for me recently and at last I have a true capture of this film.
