New Land Panorama

            Some of the newest land on Earth was being forged in this view of the edge of the lava flow around what was once Kapoho Bay on the Big Island of Hawaii last year. By this point the gratuitous lava flow from Fissure 8 had slowed somewhat and the lava river crusted over as it approached the sea. At the edge of the new land the lava breaks out of the lava tubes and contacts the cool ocean water forming dense clouds of laze, a mix of steam, hydrochloric acid, and tiny glass particles. These clouds streak away from the edge blown by the prevailing trade winds. Volcanoes are the one force of disaster that can create as well as destroy. Hundreds of homes were destroyed in this eruption and also hundreds and hundreds of acres of new land were created. Among those new acres of land is the land you see here. Parts of the new land here are so thick that it could be a hundred years before it completely solidifies.
