Destruction and Creation - a photo on Flickriver

            Hundreds of acres of new hot black basalt land send huge clouds of laze into the sky at the ocean entry. Laze is a combination of hydrochloric acid, saltwater steam, and tiny volcanic glass particles that the US Geological Survey describes as being like diffuse battery acid cloud. You can see the trade winds consistently blowing it inland. Down below, a lava tour boat surveys the ocean entry from the sea. Patchy rain makes a rainbow here just after sunrise. By this point in the eruption the ocean entry zone had become extremely broad and crusted over. At the edges the lava breaks out of the crust and plunges into the sea. More than 800 acres of new land were added, and two entire communities were wiped out along the coast.
