The latest project of Joshua Redman from Berkeley, CA involves a vocalist for the first time - Gabrielle Cavassa from Escondido, CA. The album "Where Are We" that has come out of it consists of songs about places and the people in them. It has been panned by some critics as similar sounding, mellow easy listening ballads, but this was not my experience of the live group. Here they performed "Streets Of Philadelphia" (Springsteen), “Goin’ To Chicago” (Basie/Rushing) combined with “Chicago" (Sufjan Stevens), "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" (Jimmy Webb), "Stars Fell on Alabama” (Frank Perkins/Mitchell Parish) combined with “Alabama” (Coltrane) and "Hotel California" (Frey/Felder/Henley), Redman told us they were adding an appropriate song for each leg of their European tour. Here it was "Foggy Day (in London Town)" (Georga & Ira Gershwin). I am curious about the choices for Munich and Stockholm. This was the nineth time I have seen Redman live (the first in 2000), and I took photos on three of them - with James Farm in 2015 (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/albums/72157661338505456/), a duo with Brad Mehldau in 2016 (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/albums/72157672982661793/) and his Still Dreaming Band in 2019 (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/albums/72157678315163437/).
